What is LIMA Dog Training and Why Is It Best for My Dog?
When I earned my CPDT-KA (Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers, Knowledge Assessed) in May 2023, I pledged to use LIMA training methods for the good of all dogs everywhere. What’s LIMA, though? LIMA stands for Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive, and it’s scientifically proven to be the most effective way to train your dog.
There are several reasons why LIMA dog training, also known as positive reinforcement training, is considered a better option than using aversive methods such as a prong or shock collar to train dogs:
Promotes positive behavior: LIMA dog training focuses on rewarding good behavior, rather than punishing bad behavior. This approach encourages the dog to repeat positive behavior, which can help improve their behavior in the long run.
Avoids fear and aggression: Shock collars use a painful electric shock to correct bad behavior, which can cause fear, anxiety, and even aggression in dogs. LIMA dog training avoids these negative effects by using positive reinforcement techniques that do not cause pain or discomfort.
Builds a strong bond: LIMA dog training involves rewarding the dog with treats, praise, and playtime, which can help build a strong bond between the dog and the trainer. This can lead to a more positive and enjoyable training experience for both the dog and the trainer.
More humane: LIMA dog training is considered a more humane and ethical approach to dog training because it does not involve the use of painful stimuli or negative reinforcement. Instead, it focuses on positive reinforcement, which can help create a more positive and enjoyable training experience for the dog.
Overall, LIMA dog training is considered a better option than using a shock collar because it promotes positive behavior, avoids fear and aggression, builds a strong bond, and is more humane.
